Clinical Hypnotherapy

Hypnosis is a subject surrounded in mystery. There are many misguided conceptions as to what it is, ranging from a form of mind control to some sort of magical event. Generally, most think it is dangerous, or it belongs in Hollywood. The set-up stage shows and movies, and bad publicity have attributed to this lack of understanding.

Dating back to the ancient civilisations and into the early 1700's hypnosis has been around for a long time. The original ideas on what it was and who it was used to treat have all advanced as it has been studied and practiced. From priests to doctors and specialists of medicines hypnosis has fascinated many.

Today we continue to learn about this phenomenon and ideas may still differ with individuals who practice it. What is agreed on is that whatever hypnosis is and however we explain it, a positive change can occur.

So, what is Hypnosis?

HYPNOSIS IS A COMPLETETLY NATURAL STATE

Described as "deeply relaxed or a trance like state" it is familiar to us. It is a natural state of physical, mental and emotional relaxation, along with a heightened state of awareness. It is known in the medical filed as the Alpha state or the moment when we are just about to slip into sleep. It is how we feel when meditating or engrossed in a good book or even when driving and we suddenly arrive at our destination. Time as we know it slips by. All hypnosis is self-hypnosis, meaning it is NOT the practitioner or hypnotherapist who gets you to this state it is YOU and YOUR imagination. You are guided through words and sentences and suggestions by the hypnotherapist. There are no hidden powers.

We must understand there are two distinct parts to the mind. The conscious and the sub-conscious. The conscious mind is our outer mind and operates in the present moment. It controls decision making, planning and organisation. This if the critical mind, and it is capable of logical and intellectual thinking. It is our active and short-term memory.

The sub-conscious mind is our inner mind. It is divided into the intermediate sub-conscious and the base sub-conscious. This is our source of creativity and imagination. Attitudes, beliefs, emotions, feeling and gut instinct are all controlled here. This is where addictions, compulsions, habits and relationship patterns are formed. The sub-conscious mind functions through protective reactions and holds long term memories. It also controls our involuntary bodily functions.

The state of the hypnotic trance allows the conscious mind and sub-conscious mind to work together on the same concept without conflict. Conscious awareness of the 'real world' is lessened, and we become more aware of our internal reality.

When used as a tool of therapy hypnosis suggests new ideas for healing, it also allows pre-existing tools to be accessed and used. Importantly the sub-conscious mind is your protection. It will not allow any change to occur unless it is for your greater good.

Physically the body may slump, and all muscles relax. The breath can become more regular and deeper, increased watering of the eyes can occur. Body temperature can change. We are different with different physical sign occurring.

Psychologically you are in a state of deep relaxation, but you are alert. You are aware of what is being said, you are aware when there is movement. Your focus is on words that are spoken, and your imagination is guided to take over. You may not want to come out of this state or trance when it is time.

Anyone willing and able can by hypnotised. The power of the mind is the greatest medicine we have available to us. The thoughts and beliefs you have held onto for however long can be changed if YOU want them to be.
